Fan Cheng Two keys for consumer robots to move towards economies of scale

Published on:2020-04-22

In the film and television plot, artificial intelligence (AI) has entered human life in the mode of robot and holographic projection. In real life, although AI has not yet reached the service level conceived by the screenwriter in pursuit of the first principle, when the number of consumer robots reaches a sufficient scale, the commercial value generated by networking services will gradually ferment in the service scene that attaches importance to user experience.

In this regard, Guo LiuZong, CEO of Nuwa creation, whose core business is consumer robots, said that there are roughly two key factors that will determine the popularity of consumer robots, namely, the expressiveness and price of robots.

For the first point of expressiveness, Guo LiuZong said that based on sufficient expressiveness, the product positioning of robots can be distinguished from general electronic products such as tablets and mobile phones. The overall expressiveness depends on the joint flexibility of manipulator and limb, as well as the development of AI. Taking the US customers inquiry about the use of robots in the treatment and teaching of autistic children as an example, the closer the robot action is to humans, the more effective it can play in social therapy.

The second is price. Guo LiuZong pointed out that in the past, the robot market faced the promotion threshold of high cost. When the price is too high, resulting in a low number of purchases in the market, it is difficult to attract software developers to join the ecosystem, so let alone launch more attractive robot software solutions.

In terms of the operation of start-up enterprises, in view of the above two, Nuwa creation invested in the self-development of servo motor from the beginning, and grasped the manufacturing and supply of servo motor in its hands. Guo LiuZong pointed out that when the average market price of the servo motor was as high as $100, Nuwa created to control the unit cost of the servo motor in single digits, thereby greatly reducing the cost and selling price of the robot.

After controlling the cost, we can maximize the flexibility of the limbs by installing a large number of servo motors on the robot. Take the kaibi robot as an example. There are 12 servo motors on the whole robot, creating a human like swinging arm, as well as a flexible head and chassis, so as to create rich expressiveness.

Finally, Guo LiuZong said that if robots are bound to become an irreplaceable part of human life, it is believed that in addition to the substantive "functions" that can be played, such as teaching and reception, robots, as a medium for emotional communication between users at home, will be an important meaning of their existence in the future.
